I spent most of the day with the most fearless woman I know…my mother-in-law. Her fearlessness is contagious and inspiring. I watch her serve her family and enjoy life in the midst of great loss for her personally. She’s a widow. She’s been one for eight months now. I’ve studied her while being around her and the family and admired her courage to face each day with true grace and grit. She is fearless but not for nothing. She lives knowing God is with her. She is resolved in that truth. So days like today when she goes to (what seems like a million) grocery stores to buy food for special dishes she is going to prepare for her family, I watch her.
I want to be like her – to live with a resolve in my heart to serve and live with joy. She laughs with her whole heart and listens to animated stories told in her presence. She is present. Unafraid. Truly herself. She reminds me of someone I’ve read about..the Proverbs 31 woman. The woman I didn’t think was possible but I have seen it, even more so in the last eight months.
What a gift to me she is. I hope she knows that. In a world where women live for themselves, she is fearlessly living to serve others and has joy doing it. She has days when I see her quietly sad, but she is real with her emotions and gives herself permission to live with courage. I thank God for the beauty of a fearless woman who loves us and leads by example, pushing past any fear to live with courage because she knows God is with her and loves her. Fear doesn’t define her. God’s love defines her.
Strength and honor are her clothing;
She shall rejoice in time to come.
She opens her mouth with wisdom,
And on her tongue is the law of kindness.
She watches over the ways of her household,
And does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and call her blessed;
Her husband also, and he praises her:
“Many daughters have done well,
But you excel them all.”
Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing,
But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.
Give her of the fruit of her hands,
And let her own works praise her in the gates.
Have a blessed weekend!
With all my heart,
