Don’t play favorites

“…’Teacher, we know that You are true, and teach the way of God in truth; nor do You care about anyone, for You do not regard the person of men.” Matthew 22:16b

Another translation of this verse puts it this way, “Teacher,” they said, “we know how honest you are. You teach the way of God truthfully. You are impartial and don’t play favorites.”

So Jesus didn’t play favorites. He didn’t look at social, economical nor cultural standing. I love this fact about Him. He didn’t hold back on sharing truth because of who He may offend. The reason I’m so in awe of this trait is because I can get hung up on these things, sometimes thinking too highly of myself and sometimes thinking too low of myself.

In a world where self-help books tout titles like, “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a $&*#” the truest example of this solid sense of self is found in Jesus. We obviously crave solidness of character in ourselves and others, but it is a rare thing because too often people have agendas. Jesus had the only valid agenda, His Father’s.

That’s the key. When our agenda is His agenda we are free from being consumed with opinions others have about us, and we won’t fall into the trap of playing favorites!

Jesus said to love people. He didn’t say to be a slave to them. So tonight to end this blog post that’s the challenge for us…seek God’s will, God’s agenda and be willing to surrender our agenda to get to the good stuff, the freedom stuff.
